Now you may consider this odd, but I like to make up songs while driving down the road. I’ve done this since I was a little girl. Although my parents encouraged this budding singer/making-up-songs-as-she-went-along-child, I am sure there were times when they wished I would just shut up!
I still continue to sing in the car, and I found out that I would forget the melody and words when I got home and started to write them down. Much to my dismay, I have been unable to recall some pretty good stuff (since I am the only one that hears any of these songs, mind you, this is just one and my opinion!). So, to solve this little problem, I bought a voice recorder. Now when I am traveling down the road, creating, and if I think I am on to something, whether it is an idea or song, I record it. It is has been a very handy tool, and have used it to record lectures or interviews when I was writing human- interest stories for the local newspaper.
Since the beginning of time, there has always some form of music. It is said that the universe and all things are created and maintained by sound and that everything has its own song.
There are many scientific studies showing the benefits of music and sound showing that sound waves can produce changes in the immune, endocrine, autonomic and neuropeptide systems of the body. All matter emits a vibration or sound wave, each with its own unique frequency. Edgar Cayce, also known as the Sleeping Prophet predicted that sound and music therapy would become the medicine of the future. That has proven to be true for there are many institutions using sound and music therapy to aid the body in healing itself.
In the ancient past, and still today in many cultures, the voices gather together singing, and making music for the benefit of well being. The ancient mystics knew of these benefits, and encouraged the use of sound for healing. Science is just catching up with this ancient knowledge and practice.
I think most people are self conscious of the sound of their voice, especially singing. I don’t consider myself a particularly good singer – but I sing anyway. In singing or recording and listening back to my own voice has a particular benefit of its own. This is because each person’s voice has frequencies unique to the individual and affects the biochemical processes of the body. There are those who believe our cells get their operating instructions from the patterns of our voices.
I have noticed from personal experience if I don’t sing for a while, my voice is weaker. Our voices need exercise just as our bodies do. But no matter what you believe about sound, or singing, music just makes you feel good. Especially if you can make your own, no matter what your voice sounds like – your body will resonate with the sound that is you.
And you never know, one day you may create a beautiful melody with a message. Just be sure you have a recorder handy so you won’t forget it.
