There is just something magical about soft lighting in the garden at night. It creates an air of mystery and enchantment. Illuminating our yard brings elements of the Sky World to a different level for our enjoyment. Solar lights gather in the sun’s energy from the day and radiate the softness of the moon’s energy at night.
These spheres of light come in all designs and materials. I like the ones made of glass that add color, and we have glass solar lights called illuminaries scattered throughout the yard. It is as if the moon is shining through the petaled glass and blessing everything in its midst.
Because of solar cell and LED technology, we are able to enjoy these little globes, miniature worlds of light in our gardens and yards. LED stands for light emitting diode. Putting it simply, an LED is a semiconductor that converts electricity into light. During the day, the power of the sun charges its battery. This technology has been around since the 1960’s and has continually progressed and just recently finding its way into residential outdoor lighting. More and more people are changing from traditional yard lighting to solar and that is because solar lights are very efficient and are charged even on cloudy days or during the winter months.
There are many benefits and advantages of this type of lighting. With few movable parts there is little maintenance and attention once installed, they last a long time, no energy cost, using solar power is a renewable resource, provides security along driveways or sidewalks, they stay on when the electricity goes out, it is safer as there is no risk of electrocuting yourself and cool to the touch. They have sensors that shut down during the daylight hours and turn on automatically when night falls. They are versatile and can be used in homes, cabins, boats, along walkways, and because you don’t have to connect them to the electrical system of your home, easy to install. Just stake them in the ground, hang them up on a shepherd hook or tree. Now how much easier can it get? And the best part is that they are environmentally beneficial. There are no emissions that can contribute to global warming. With increasing technological advances, solar lighting is sure to be increasing as perhaps our primary light source in our homes instead of electricity.
We have solar lighting up and down the driveway and scattered throughout the garden and yard. Not only is it beautiful to look at, it is really nice when we walk the dog during the late hours of the night to have some light. There are times when we hear a noise in the yard and because of the lights, we are able to distinguish between animal and human. It is usually a deer, raccoon and once in a great while a bobcat or bear. We live in the country away from city lights and believe me; it gets the ‘can’t see your hand in front of your face’ kind of dark.
The addition of solar lights adds security and beauty to any environment. And all it takes is a little sunlight to create a moonlight garden.
