So, you have finished medical school, residency, passed all the medical board tests, so now what? No doubt, it is every physicians dream to have their own private practice. After finding the right location and perfect place to open an office, the next step is to make sure it is equipped with the latest technological ‘tools of the trade.’
A well-equipped office will ensure that your clinic runs smoothly, organized and professionally at all times.
Many years ago when I was a child, my parents had a friend who just opened a family practice in the little town I grew up in. He was a bachelor and I remember how all the single women in town were all gaga over him! He had curly, sandy blond hair, blues eyes and considered THE catch of the county! Dr. G would come to the house to ‘hide’ out and get some rest between working and his very active social life, and after one of my mother’s home cooked meals, he would crash in the guest room. While he was sleeping, he’d let me play with the stethoscope he always carried in his bag. I was always fascinated by it and ‘listened’ to my doll’s heart and practiced on my cat, and for just a while, I was the ‘doctor’ in the house. Little did I know at the time I was using a device that was invented in 1816 by Dr. Rene Theophile Hyacinthe Laennec.
Before the invention of the stethoscope, doctors would literally place their ear on the patient’s chest or back to listen to heart and lung sounds. Doctors made house calls back then, and there were many times when his visits were professional as well as friendly. Sometimes the cure was a simple ‘hot toddy,’ even when we were kids. The hot tea of brandy, and I think he even put a tiny bit of vapor rub salve on the top, (do not do this at home), it tasted terrible, but we certainly slept well and always felt better the next morning. I don’t know if it was the brandy, vapor rub, the herb tea, or the combination of the three that worked so well. And, too, I think his gift in healing, a kind and compassionate heart contributed to our getting well.
It is much different today. Doctors don’t make house calls anymore. However, they do still carry medical bags for emergencies. Advances in technological knowledge and equipment have enabled the practicing physician to give the best care possible to his/her patients. The standard equipment for a doctor’s office also applies to nursing homes, hospitals, mobile medical units, and can also expand your home emergency kit.
No doubt, when you are in one of the exam rooms you can’t help but notice all the latest ‘tools of doctoring,’ and exam room supplies, including stethoscopes, blood pressure monitors, instrument trays, exam lamps, and that familiar stool on rollers.
